DigitalNow 2009: Registration Now Open!

DigitalNow 2009:

Be Seen, Be Heard, Be Trusted

Registration Now Open!

"Revolution doesn't happen when society adopts new technologies - it happens when society adopts new behaviors." Clay Shirky, opening keynote speaker, DigitalNow 2009.

What are associations to make of the increasing proliferation of Web 2.0 tools? How do you decide which ones to adopt and how to adapt your organization? The key is not in the technologies themselves. In fact, technology doesn't change organizations at all - people do. Technology does, however, enable new modes of human behavior. Understanding that new behavior and its impact on your visibility and value as an organization is what DigitalNow 2009 is all about.

Untangling Twine

If you attended DigitalNow 2008, then you had the rare opportunity to get in on the ground floor of Twine, a tool that uses Semantic Web technology to support search, research, networking, and collaboration.

Often, when we embark on experimenting with a new tool such as Twine, we become tripped up in trying to understand the technology behind it, even though such understanding doesn't actually enhance the value of the tool. According to Nova Spivack, Founder of Twine, it's less important for the end user to understand how Twine works than it is to understand what it can be used for.

"The Semantic Web is a technology that's useful. It's a means to an end, not an end in itself," says Spivack. "What we're doing... is talking about what you can use Twine for, and the fact that it's powered by the Semantic Web is a detail for geeks."

But even understanding what Twine can do for us is a challenge because it takes us beyond our traditional understanding of how web search works. For an overview of Twine and the semantic web technology that enables it, read this article from Technology Review.

It's not too late to hear the DigitalNow 2008 keynote by Twine Founder Nova Spivack. Watch the first of four clips of Nova's presentation below, or visit http://www.FusionProductionsNetwork.com.

The digital company of 2013: Do you have the right stuff?

What will the digital company of 2013 look like? What will you need to be successful five years from now?

According to a two-part study conducted by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), and sponsored by AT&T, Nokia, PricewaterhouseCoopers, SAP, Concep, Return Path and WebEx, the key enabler to success in this not so distant future isn't a new networking tool or infrastructure design. What successful organizations really need is courage.

Collaborative technology will be the norm, with information freely flowing in and out of organizations. According to www.EIU.com, executives will need "... a great deal of courage—to allow technology to bring customers and other third parties into the company's operations—and trust in their employees to access and use information freely."

The report, which is titled, The digital company 2013: Freedom to collaborate also found that:
  • Technology knowledge will permeate the enterprise.

  • Social networks will be common in the workplace, like it or not.

  • Beware information paralysis.

  • Digital tools will democratise access to information.

  • IT will also need to loosen the reins.

  • Ceding technology control will be good medicine.
